Zips, buttons, laces and hook-and-loop are worked into the pages, so a toddler can practise each one at their own pace. That matters: learning a button on a book on the living room floor is a completely different experience from learning it on a coat while everyone stands waiting at the door.

Threading a lace or closing a button requires two hands doing different things at the same time, which is one of the genuinely difficult coordination skills of this age. Jules the dog turns the practice into a story, and children stick at it far longer when there is a character involved.
